It's Freakin' Bats

Last Christmas, I scrapped a DIY doormat project after a few mishaps and running out of time before the big day. I'd planned to pick up where I'd left off for this Christmas, until I got it in my head that I needed a new Halloween doormat.

My usual pumpkin mat was looking pretty sad and every mat I found in stores that I liked was sold out so I decided to make my own based on this cute bat doormat from World Market.

I eyeballed the design and traced it on the back of the mat with chalk. Then I cut out the bat with a boxcutter. Definitely use a super sharp blade if you're going to do this, mine was a little dull and I had to work to get this thing cut out.

Once I was happy with the shape, I spray painted the whole thing black. This would have worked fine if I didn't have paint from my previous Christmas project on the mat already. I ended up going back over the whole mat with regular black paint to cover up the original design.

After I got better coverage, I added eyes, ears, and other details to my bat using a small paintbrush and the same yellow paint used on my front door. Lastly, I sprayed it with a coat of Flex Seal to keep it looking nice all season.

My new bat mat turned out so cute and coordinates perfectly with my bat door knocker that I bring out every year. I just need to add a few more pumpkins and my Halloween porch will be all set for trick-or-treaters!
